Latino Cultural Background- Reflection

Pre-Comlumbian Pyramids

1) History
  • The Maya lived in what we call Mesoamerica.
  • Civilization covered southern Mexico
  • History dived into three periods: Pre-Classic, Classic and Post-Classic
  • Lasted from 400 BCE - 1520 CE
  • The Maya were excellent record keepers
  • Wrote their history in codices (figbark paper books)
2) Architecture
  • The pyramid-temples of Mesoamerica were surmounted by religious temples
  • Religious activity and rituals happened at these sites, possibly daily
  • Highly accurate astronomical observations were made from the temples
  • The sacred buildings should be located in places of power
3) Construction Methods
  • The temples were built using simple and rustic tools made of stone
  • Same pattern for every building
  • Buildings were then stuccoed and almost certainly painted
  • Most cases this stucco did not survive
